Deepa studied lighting design at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, while pursuing a BFA in Dance. She has been designing for dance and theatre since 2007. In the US, artists’ whose work she has lit include José Limón, Trisha Brown, George Balanchine, Shapiro & Smith, Sardono W. Kusumo, Gregory Maqoma, Nathan Trice and Preeti Vasudevan.
In India, prominant artists she has worked with include: Sonal Mansingh, Dadi Padamjee, Lilette Dubey, Rama Vaidyanathan, Geeta Chandran, Pratibha Prahlad, Gilles Chuyen, Justin McCarthy, Daksha Sheth, Anita Ratnam, Bijoyini Sathpathy, Moya Michaels, Nikhil Mehta, Faezeh Jalali, Aranyani Bhargav and Sanjukta Wagh. She has toured Japan, Korea, Bahrain, England, Egypt, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Sri Lanka and Jamaica as a lighting designer.
Deepa was visiting faculty at the Drama School, Mumbai where she taught lighting design. She also regularly conducts online and in-person workshops for dancers, actors and performers on ‘Moving with Light’.
